"De pequeño era el típico niño repelente que se pasaba horas y horas archivando y catalogando sus colecciones", confiesa Joan Navarro, que, no levantando más de tres palmos del suelo, controlaba las librerías de segunda mano, siempre a la búsqueda de los números de los tebeos que le faltaban. Cuando cualquier otra persona en Empúries (Gerona) hubiera encontrado restos de un ánfora, el joven Navarro halló entre los restos de civilizaciones milenarias el número 14 de Jabato. Para él fue todo un hallazgo arqueológico. Reconoce que el coleccionismo "es un auténtico vicio. Mi gran obsesión ha sido obtener un ejemplar de todos los tebeos editados en España".En 1974, estos locos de las viñetas fundaron el Club de Amigos de la Historieta, del cual Joan Navarro fue nombrado redactor jefe de su boletín "Esta responsabilidad", dice "me llevó a escribir y hacer crítica de tebeos". Desde el club se realizó una ingente labor de búsqueda y clasificación de tebeos españoles antiguos, tarea que tiene su expresión en el Catálogo del tebeo en España. 1915 1965, del que Navarro es coautor.
Los miembros de esta curiosa entidad se reunían cada jueves. "Nunca faltamos a nuestra cita semanal entre 1975 y l982", dice Navarro. Dos sectores claramente definidos componían el club: los coleccionistas dedicados a un determinado personaje o serie y, por otro lado, un grupo de jóvenes interesados por la historieta en general.
Paralelamente a sus actividades como coleccionista y especialista en comics, Joan Navarro se dedicó profesionalmente a la música y formó parte del grupo Melodrama. "Con el dinero de las actuaciones vivíamos como auténticos reyes", recuerda. "Además, me quedaba mucho tiempo libre para dedicarme al boletín del club". En 1980, cuando todavía hacía bolos con el grupo cada fin de semana, le llamó el editor Rafael Martínez para que se encargara de llevar las publicaciones de comics de Norma Editorial.
De su paso por Norma, la revista Cairo fue su creación más personal, en la que intentó "reunir el material de autores jóvenes autóctonos junto a obras extranjeras de calidad". Con la experiencia acumulada se lanzó a la aventura de editar Complot, pero a pesar de los buenos augurios, las cifras de las ventas descubrieron una triste realidad: la revista no tenía éxito.
La travesía por el desierto de Navarro duró cerca de tres años, pero una vez superada la crisis le ofrecieron ser el coordinador del Salón Internacional del Comic de Barcelona de 1988. "De hecho, era la única persona con disponibilidad para desarrollar semejante tarea", dice. Precisamente, Joan Navarro ha vivido hace pocos días los cuatro días más intensos del año con la celebración de la séptima edición del salón.
